LANSING – Michigan-based car giant General Motors today announced a $174 million stamping facility at the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant, expected to create or retain 145 jobs.

The new facility will produce stamping components for the Cadillac ATS and Cadillac CTS family of vehicles and “a future product,” General Motors said in a press release issued today, Lansing has been announced as the site of the next Camaro, though the company has not drawn a direct line between this investment and the sporty ride.

“We can tell you it’s to handle current product and future products, and one of the future products that’s been announced so far is the Camaro,” said Lansing Regional Plant Manager Tony Francavilla.

Including this stamping plant, GM has announced $530 million in investments in its Lansing area manufacturing since 2009.

And this is the third announcement related to GM growth in the Lansing area in recent weeks. The company is also exploring a $37 million expansion to its Delta Township plant and one of their suppliers is building a $65.5 million plant in Watertown Township.

“Lansing Grand River Assembly is known for the high quality of its work and the flexible manufacturing that has been a trademark since it opened,” said GM North America Manufacturing Manager Christine Sitek. “Today’s announcement demonstrates GM’s commitment to strengthening key plant capabilities related to quality and efficiency.”

The facility is expected to be operational by 2016, and the company estimates it will save about $14 million per year in logistics costs tied to material handling. Being constructed at the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant right now is a $45 million logistics center.

Between the two projects the plant will add 600,000 square feet, growing its total footprint by 20 percent, said Francavilla.

There is also a stamping plant at the Lansing Delta Township Plant. Francavilla said this expansion would double the region’s stamping capacity.

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union, which represents workers at the plant, praised the move.

“This major investment is a vote of confidence in the hard-working membership of UAW Local 652. We’re proud of the role we played in helping rebuild Michigan’s economy through collective bargaining and negotiations for investment and jobs in our UAW-represented plants,” said UAW Vice President City Estrada, who directs the union’s General Motors Department.

“I think I can speak for all of the UAW members at General Motors’ Lansing Grand River plant when I say we are thrilled to have this additional investment in the plant and the jobs it will create in the community,” said UAW Region 1D Director Gerald Kariem.

Francavilla said the company is growing in the region.

“Success breeds success. We have a good platform to start with and we feel we can continue to grow in the region and obviously we’re putting our money where our mouth is,” Francavilla said.
